Chem 6A

Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to lead a discussion with fellow faculty about Curtis Bonk's book, The World is Open. There are so many new, free educational technology tools available now, it's hard to know where to begin! I'm very excited about the possibilities here. I listed as many relevant links from Bonk's book as I could on the following page:

http://www.commutercampus.com/theworldisopen.html

Just as an experiment, I used the list as a springboard to collect as many relevant sites as I could for a high school chemistry class. This is what I found...

Here is a free, online, "open source" chemistry textbook:

This is a really cool idea – it’s a learning group in which people participate via voice, and it’s actually a real high school chemistry class:

This is a great approach, too: a free learning community dedicated to chemistry:

The Khan Academy has a lot more than just math videos:

OpenCulture has a plethora of links to free audiobooks, ebooks, lectures, learning units, etc., etc., including chemistry sites:

Here is a link to the MIT courses in chemistry:

http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/chemistry/

And here is one of their undergraduate videos:

Here is a similar resource from Yale:

There’s some chemistry videos on “TeacherTube”:

“SchoolTube” has a song about the elements!

Every element gets its own video on YouTube:

This would be a great resource but it looked as if the AP chemistry podcast disappeared last time I checked:

“The Catalyst” site is dedicated to chemistry teachers, and it has a page with links to other relevant resources:

http://www.thecatalyst.org/qa.html

Illinois State offers high school chemistry class materials for free:

This one has a ton of helpful links:

Ditto for this one, from the American Chemical Society:

Last but not least, this list of links is geared to high school students:
